I moved to Munich, Germany nearly 12 years ago, - yay! My Germanniversary is coming up in September to be exact!! That’s right—12 whole years! Can you believe it? It feels surreal even typing that number, but here I am.
And it’s one of those things that feels both like a blink of an eye and a lifetime all at once because China feels SO far away and the person who left in her mid-30s has learned and grown so much since then.
Moving to Munich nearly 12 years ago was the start to my new life here in Munich after Beijing one of the transformative parts of my life when it comes to physical, emotional, and mental health.
Munich has been more than just a place to live—it’s where I’ve grown, learned, and embraced new adventures. It's shaped who I am today in ways I couldn't have imagined when I first arrived.
In these 12 years, I’ve had the chance to explore not just Munich, but also so many parts of Europe that are just a short trip away. The culture, the people, and the experiences have enriched my life in countless ways.
This milestone is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a celebration of the ups and downs that come with expat life (in SO MANY WAYS, Germany has been WAY Harder to adjust to than China), and yet the deep gratitude I feel for all that Munich has given me.
It hasn't always been easy, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
#1 Munich: Where Biking Trails Are Your New Best Friend
Alright, let’s talk about one of the best-kept secrets of living in Munich: the biking trails all over the city.
The trails here are nothing short of spectacular along the Isar River, and they’re waiting for you to conquer them.
The Trails: Your New Playground
First off, Munich isn’t just a city; it’s a biking paradise if you don't have a car and don't want one. And let’s be real, there’s no better way to experience the city than on two wheels.
There are so many cool neighborhoods I found while getting lost and beautiful parks and new places.
Plus, especially in the summer when it's HOT, it's so much better being on a bike (many Ubahns don't have AC and smell a bit swampy in summer honestly)! Plus, on a bike, you have the wind in your hair, the sun on your face, and the freedom to explore every nook and cranny of this amazing place.
Biking to the English Garden or along the Isar River
When it's nice out, people in Munich go to the English Garden or they pick up some drinks and snacks and sit along the Isar River for a picnic or BBQ. It's a cheap activity with every age of people hanging out.
Join the Biking Revolution
So, grab your helmet, pump up those tires, and get ready to fall in love with biking in Munich - plus it's a great way to stay fit. You’ll be amazed at how much more you’ll see, how much more you’ll enjoy, and just how much fun you’ll have while saving yourself time as well. It’s not just a mode of transport; it’s a better way to liv. Trust me, once you start, you won’t want to stop.
#2 Munich’s Natural Wonders: Your Personal Playground
Alright, let’s chat about something that makes living in Munich feel like hitting the jackpot: nature. If you’re someone who gets giddy at the sight of green spaces, rivers, and forests, you’re going to fall head over heels for this city.
Imagine waking up every day knowing that stunning natural spots are just a hop, skip, and jump away. This was ESPECIALLY useful during the 3 COVID lockdowns where we couldn't do anything except 'macht sport' outside. At least in Bavaria this was the case it's an extremely outdoor culture here.
Parks Galore
From the massive English Garden (think of it as Central Park’s European cousin) to smaller, charming spots scattered throughout the city, there’s a park for every mood.
,Want to chill by a lake, enjoy a picnic, or just take a leisurely stroll? And if you’re a jogger or cyclist, get ready to fall in love with Munich’s extensive park trails.
Rivers: Nature’s Highway Right in the City
Next up: rivers. Munich’s got some seriously scenic waterways. The Isar River, as I mentioned above, is a gem. During the week or on the weekends, you can have a lazy afternoon by the riverbank, maybe alone with a book or a picnic with friends, or perhaps just watching the world float by. It’s like having a nature retreat right in the middle of the city.
#3 Quick Getaways to Bavaria’s Stunning Lakes
If you’re living in Munich and haven’t yet discovered the treasures of the nearby lakes, let me tell you—you’re missing out!
Just a short trip from the city, we’ve got some of the most breathtaking lake destinations you could imagine: Tegernsee Lake, Walchensee, and Spitzingsee.
Tegernsee Lake: Your Lakeside Paradise
First up, let’s talk about Tegernsee Lake. Just a short train ride from Munich, this lake is the definition of picturesque.
Surrounded by lush green mountains and charming villages, it’s the perfect place to spend a relaxing day. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the lake’s edge, rent a paddleboat for some fun on the water, or simply take in the views from one of the many lakeside cafes.
And if you’re up for a bit of adventure, the surrounding mountains offer fantastic hiking trails with breathtaking vistas!
Walchensee: A Hidden Gem
Next on our list is Walchensee, often called the “Jewel of Bavaria.” This stunning lake is known for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant blue hues making it perfect for swimming, sailing, or just chilling by the shore. And if you’re a hiking enthusiast, you’ll love the trails that offer incredible panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. It’s a bit of a hidden gem that’s definitely worth exploring!
Spitzingsee: Adventure Awaits
Last but certainly not least is Spitzingsee, a beautiful alpine lake that’s ideal for both relaxation and adventure. Nestled high in the mountains, Spitzingsee offers a cool, crisp environment perfect for escaping the summer heat. The Rotwand and Roßkopf hikes bring people to this area and there's even a cable car if you're not into hiking. It’s a great spot to recharge and enjoy some fresh mountain air.

#5 Munich Is Clean And Safe
One of the most underrated but highly appreciated things about living in Munich is how clean and safe the city is. It's one of those subtle yet powerful aspects of daily life that makes a huge difference.
Whether you’re walking through the vibrant Marienplatz or cycling along the Isar River, you’ll notice that the streets are spotless, well-maintained, and beautifully organized. The city takes pride in keeping its public spaces pristine, with recycling bins and street-cleaning crews around every corner.
Safety is another major perk in Munich as it consistently ranks as one of the safest cities in Germany, and it’s not hard to see why. You can comfortably walk around at night, take late public transport, or cycle through town without worrying about crime.
Whether you're in a bustling neighborhood or a quiet residential area, there's a feeling of security that allows you to enjoy the city without the stress that often comes with urban living.
#6 Beer Gardens Everywhere—Perfect for Sunny Afternoons with Friends!
One of the best things about living in Munich? Beer gardens. Seriously, they’re not just a place to grab a drink—they’re a lifestyle.
Picture this: the sun is shining, you’ve had a long week, and what’s better than grabbing a cold beer with friends under the shade of massive chestnut trees? Oh, and it’s not just about the beer.
You’ve got pretzels the size of your head, sausages sizzling on the grill, and the most laid-back vibes you’ll ever experience.
If you’ve never been to a Munich beer garden, you’re missing out. It’s where you’ll find locals and tourists alike, laughing, eating, drinking, and just soaking in life. The best part? You’re totally allowed to bring your own food! Yep, pack a picnic, grab your pals, and we’ll meet you at the tables.
#7 Rich culture with endless museums, festivals, and art galleries.
Munich may not be Berlin with its iconic nightlife and underground clubs, but it more than holds its own when it comes to culture. This city is bursting with a rich history, artsy vibes, and endless opportunities to dive into cultural experiences that are truly one of a kind.
Museums for Days
Munich is home to some of the best museums in Europe. The Alte Pinakothek is a must for art lovers, with its vast collection of European masterpieces. Then there’s the Deutsches Museum, the largest science and technology museum in the world. From contemporary art at the Pinakothek der Moderne to history at the Bavarian National Museum, you'll never run out of places to explore.
Festivals Everywhere
This city loves a good festival! From the famous Oktoberfest (yes, it’s more than just beer!) to the Filmfest München, a world-class film festival, there’s always something happening. Plus, Munich’s Christmas markets are hands-down magical – perfect for soaking up some festive cheer with mulled wine in hand.
and Music & Theatre Scene
For music lovers, Munich’s Bavarian State Opera is a dream, offering world-renowned performances in a breathtaking venue. The Gasteig Cultural Center hosts concerts, theatre, and film screenings all year round, and there are plenty of jazz clubs and live music spots to discover throughout the city.
With all its museums, festivals, galleries, and performances, Munich is a cultural hub that’s often overlooked. It's proof that you don’t need Berlin’s techno beats to experience something truly enriching!
